The Keweenaw Chain Drive Festival mountain bike race includes 16- and 32-mile point-to-point cross-country distance races and the Junior Chain Drive youth races, and the Cemetary King of the Mountain. First one to hit dirt at the top of cemetary hill receives $50.
Each racer receives:
- a cool wiking t-shirt
- lots of free grub at the finish
- free photo downloads (there are multiple photographers on the course, so chances are good you'll find yourself)
- Distance events will begin with a 10 a.m. roll-out at the Best Western Franklin Square Inn, at the east end of Shelden Avenue in downtown Houghton.
The course routes are marked only once each year. There are plenty of lodging options available, from motels to B&Bs, to camping.
The Chain Drive promotes the sport of mountain biking through fun family events and supports trail preservation efforts throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula.
All funds raised by the festival will go to trail improvement, access and acquisition projects in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties.
After Saturday’s distance events, all riders will receive a ticket for a sandwich and a drink when they return their chip timer. Additional food will be available to purchase at the finish. The finish line will also have goodies such as bananas and home made desserts and cookies for all registered racers.
