Working with advisors from Consultoria Balam s.c., IMBA has helped guide the construction and maintenance of more than 150 kilometers of trails in the town of San Nicolás. IMBA is also developing a second area in El Ajusco, which will be open to mountain bike use later this summer.
Today, the San Nicolás area comprises three downhill courses and various singletrack and doubletrack trails for cross country riding and racing. The El Ajusco area is currently constructing a 20-kilometer cross country trail with plans for further expansion later this year.
MTB Cancun & Riviera Maya is a local Mountain Biking group, created in 2007 to promote, practice and let everybody know the benefits of mountain biking in Cancun & Riviera Maya. We usually ride every Sunday, but we can offer also private MTB tours to different level trails, also visiting Cenotes, lagoons, Mayan Ruins, little Mayan villages and wild life all inside our Mexican Caribbean Jungle.

I spent four days touring the mountains around Mexico with Eric while working for the International Mountain Bicycling Association in the summer of 1999. The ride from El Ajusco to Malinalco was oneof the most epic rides of my life. The trail, which features some of the most beautiful vistas in Mexico, is about 80km; dropping 4,500 ft. from the chilly pine forests above Mexico City, to "The Land of The Eternal Spring" in the valley below.

The Pico de Orizaba-Xalapa trip was the best yet. I'd have to say that the combination of stunning scenery, physical challenge and camaraderie over three days will be hard to top. My prior two trips with Bike Shuttle, Ajusco-Lagunas de Zempoala and Rio Frio-Amecamca (with that amazing climb toward Iztaccihuatl), were great. But because they were one-day rides, they lacked that element of really getting disconnected from the day-to-day grind.
The Pico's glacier cap, the riveting decent to the valley below and the leg-screaming climbs to San Francisco and beyond have been etched in my memory, and probably my quadriceps as well. Theaccommodations were simple but more than adequate; the hot showers are definitely a necessity, and I don't think any of the others on the ride will disagree. The meals, particularly the dinners, were excellent. There's nothing better when you're hungry enough to eat a horse burger to get treated to back-to-back plates of fresh trout or enough langostinos to feed Chilchiuapan for a week.
