Fruita has taken the world by storm in the last ten years. No other place has become so well known so quickly, and for good reason. There are two main riding areas, the Bookcliffs (north of town), and the Kokopelli's trailhead area (take I-70 West one more exit). Both have a well developed trail system. Add to this the Rabbit Valley singletracks (great singletrack that runs off of OHV roads at the Rabbit Valley exit, near the Utah border), then throw in great trails like the Ribbon (outside of Grand Junction), and the epic Icarus, and you have a fantastic variety of trails to choose from.
My favorite trails in the area are in the Kokopelli's Trail area.
Pete Fagerlin has a travelogue with lots of photos and a video from Fruita Fat Tire Fests and other trips to Fruita.
Fruita can get hot, but can be ridden when Moab gets a bit too hot, or do the Mary's Loop/Horsethief Bench combo on your way to or from Moab to get a feel for the area. (that's my recommendation!)
Over the Edge Sports maintains a trail conditions page.
Click on the map to see a bigger(307Kb) version. See the local BLM offices to get a 11" x 17" print. I'll try and get a pdf print version out in the next coupla months.
