Mountain Bike Trail Guide
You'll find epic tours and trails on most of the islands, including the much heralded Mt. Haleakala downhill on Maui. The island of Hawaii also has excellent riding.
Check out a nice handful of trails at Crater Cycles Map Page.
I've never been mountain biking in Hawaii, but I know friends who have. They always seem to come back with big grins. I have wanted to go for a long time. This may be the year to do it.
Na Ala Hele: Hawaii Trail & Access System. Designed for hikers, but there's mountain biking information in there as well if you look. Here are some examples:
- Statewide
- BBC Travel has a write up on How to choose a Hawaiian island that's great for folks that are contemplating their first visit.
- The Hawaii Bicycling League (HBL) website has maps and articles as well as excellent local information. ( http://www.hbl.org)
- Bike Hawaii sells the only guide to mountain biking Hawaii that i know of, and has a trails list (you have to click on the islands in the satellite photo.)
- Tours with experienced and qualified guides, contact Bike Hawaii.www.bikehawaii.com
- Goosehead's Hawaii Mountain Biking Page
- DownHill Hawaii is a local site with lots of pics and community projects.
- Oahu
- Maui
- Tommy Goggia's Maui Mountain Biking is one of the ugliest sites i've seen still active, but has some decent info about mountain biking Maui. With a big remodel and more maps, this could be a great site.
- An article about mountain biking in Maui (from Outside Online)
- Pete Fagerlin visits Maui and shows us the usual great pics he always takes!
- Maui Mountain Cruisers does down-volcano tours on drum-brake equipped cruisers. Fun?!? There are tons of "Haleakala Downhill" tour operators. Most use cruiser type bikes in a follow-the-leader fashion down the mountain. Some stop at places to eat. A few tours use mountain bikes and let you coast down the mountain at your own pace. Most charge $80 to $125 per person and they're all listed in the phone book.

- Big Island Mountain Biking Trails Guide
- Dreamride's Hawaii Trails
The following is archived information that is over five years old and has not been updated. Particularly here, be wary of potential changes, to include the trails not even being there anymore.

| Aiea Loop | 3 | 4 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 5 | All the way up 'Aiea Heights Drive. This one has a long walk up, but the downhill is well worth it. Lots of roots and rocks make it a very technical trail. Please look out for hikers! |
| Manana (Pacific Palisades) | 4 | 4 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 1 | 5 | High above Pearl City. This is one of my overall favorites. It's a long way up though. Be careful of hikers! |
| Mililani (Waipio) | 4 | 3 | 2 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 4 | Trail head is between the WaiawaCorrectional Facility and the Mililani Cemetary. This trail is also one of the overall best trails. This trail has many, many paths, and a lot of uphills. Going down is really nice. |
| Waimea | 1 | 5 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 5 | 4 | For $15, a van takes you up, and all you do is ride down. Very, very technical. Quick ride. Trail Update: Presently, there is no van service. No riders are allowed on the Waimea trail at this time. |
| Ma'akua Ridge (north past Sacred Falls State Park) | 3 | 3 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 3 | You'll walk all the way up this one. Downhill is not bad. |
| Hau'ula Loop (north past Sacred Falls State Park) | 3 | 3 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 3 | The head of this trail joins up with Ma'akua Ridge. Pretty much the same. |
| Kuliouou (between Hawai'i Kai andNiu Valley) | 3 | 5 | 4 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Nice trail. You'll do a lot of walking up. Well worth it when you reach the cleared area at the top. It's like a playground for bikers! |
| Maunawili (Pali Lookout) | 5 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 2 | Starts at the Pali Lookout and ends in Waimanalo. This is a looooong one. Probably always wet and muddy. Once was enough for me. |
| Mokule'ia Access Road to Kealia Trail (above Dillingham Airfield in Mokule'ia) | 5 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4 | You will need to hike up almost 4 miles up and 4 miles across the mountain to reach the ultimate technical downhill, which snakes down the mountain with many, many rocks. Expect to walk down if not technically experienced. |
| Molokai Ranch | 5 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 5 | 5 | 3 | Great for all out riding. Many, many trails to choose. Some easy, some hard. Not many downhills like Oahu though. |
| Koolau Ranch | 5 | 2 | 4 | 2 | 5 | 1 | 2 | Rode the Tread Lightly bike ride here. Lot of uphills. Seemed more casual type riding than anything. |
| Wa'ahila Valley Trails (St. Louis Heights Drive) | 1 | 5 | 3 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 5 | A very short but technical ride. If experienced, you won't dismount too often. Very, very fun! Love it! |
| West Kaunala Trail (North Shore-Pupukea) | 4 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 1 | 5 | Up Pupukea Road. This is a great trail to experience. The beginning offers more downhills than uphills. |
| Maui (Skyline - Mt. Haleakala) | 5 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | A definite must-ride! |
| Maui (Mamane - Mt. Haleakala) | 2 | 3 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | A definite must-ride! |
| Maui (Waihee Valley Swinging Bridges) | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | A very leisurely ride, with a bit of history added. |
| Century Ride | 5 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 | A very popular ride. Very casual riding. |
| Haleiwa Metric Ride | 5 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 | Ride feels like it goes on forever. |
